Relevant Education Background and Qualifications
Dr. Priyanthy Weerasekera graduated from the McMaster Undergraduate
M.D. in 1985 .Since then she has done extensive work in training psychiatry
residents, psychology students, and other allied health professionals
in various psychiatric disorders, and in particular Anxiety Disorders.
She has spent the last two years in the Faculty Development Program
supervised by Dr. Richard Swinson in the Anxiety Disorders Clinic at
St. Joseph’s Hospital Dr. Weerasekera has a particular interest
in the treatment of anxiety-disorders, the covariance between mood and
obsessive-compulsive symptoms in mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive
symptoms in post-partum depression, integrative treatments in social
phobia, and pharmacological treatments in social phobia.
Relevant Research, Professional or Community
Experience
Dr. Weerasekera is an active member of the Anxiety Disorders Clinic
at St. Joseph’s Hospital and is currently a co-investigator in
five different research grants on anxiety disorders. She is actively
involved in research projects such as Integration of panic management
strategies to the cognitive-behavioural group treatment of social phobia,
and double-blind, placebo-controlled, study of flexible dose of Venlafaxine
ER in adult outpatients with Generalized Social Anxiety Disorders. She
has also presented various papers on Obsessive-Compulsive Disorders
at contuining medical educational events.
Relevant Publications
Dr. Weerasekera has published a book and other publications on educating
various health professionals in psychiatric disorders with an emphasis
on anxiety disorders.
